"Unknown number" the caller ID flashed. Dad warned me about
talking to strangers, but something made me pick up the phone...

“It’s time to shock the pool and shut it down for winter,” Dad said that September day. He was right. You could feel the nip of fall in the air. But at nine years old, closing the pool meant summer was definitely over. I wasn’t sure what “shocking” meant. “All it means is using special strong chemicals to clean up the water,” Dad explained. “That way the pool will stay in good shape even though it’s covered all winter long.”

Dad went out to the yard and I watched glumly from the window as he opened a jug and started dumping stuff into the pool. Then he got another jug. More stuff.
