Lance Bass: No Same-Sex Dancing Partner – For Now
While Lance Bass has no qualms about dancing with a man in the public spotlight, he just doesn't think his Dancing With the Stars gig is the right outlet.
"I think it would be so silly that it would just overshadow everything else going on," Bass, the first openly gay contestant on the show, told E! Online. "I think it's so important for me to do this, but my biggest concern is I just hope it doesn't hurt the gay community in any way. I definitely feel a responsibility of making sure I represent well."
His standing in the gay community isn't the only thing on the line for Bass as a contestant on the new season of DWTS, whose new season premieres Sept. 22. As a member of the boy band ‘N Sync, he constantly suffered ridicule from his bandmates for being the worst dancer of the group.
"The guys always told me how terrible of a dancer I am," said Bass, 29. "So I kind of just wanted to prove to myself that I could learn something crazy."
Boyfriend Eager to Dance, Too
His boyfriend, Sebastian Leal, is also eager to benefit from Bass's exhaustive dance lessons. "He really wants to learn" the dances, Bass says. "But we haven't had time. When I go home, all I wanna do is just sleep and eat."
When he’s not busy breaking in his dancing shoes, Bass is focusing his efforts in the political arena, appearing at a fundraiser Saturday to fight a November ballot issue that would ban same-sex marriage in California.
While Bass says he’s "definitely not political," the issue is "just common sense."
In addition, he has a personal stake, with plans to settle down one day and start a family of his own. "I think everyone dreams of that nice romantic wedding," he says. "And I love kids. I want to adopt and I want to have my own."
