Well, USA came away with the most medals but China got the most gold medals. But I remember reading that if you were to affiliate those gold medals with the sports that the althletes won them in then the US had a major lead with almost 400 gold while China had less than 200. The US had more gold from team oriented sports (basketball, volleyball, etc) while China was more on individual sports.
