our rule is 16 and my daughter has her first boyfriend now but my son is 19 and would rather go out in groups to get to know a girl first.

I worked with teens for many years and this was the number one question that parents asked and here was my answer.  If you want your child to date someone close to their own age you have to wait until 16 if it is a one on one date. The reason for this is that is the age you can drive.  If your 13 year old daughter wants to date, then she is going out with someone at least three years older than her.

It really is better to have people go out in groups instead of one on one dating. For many reasons

well, group/supervised "dating" is fine at 13-14, just make sure they have a good knowledge of the premise from there on out. unsupervised and the like should only be allowed when they show enough responsibility, and a firm understanding of the posible consiquenses.

16 has always been the standard age for dating.  However, now kids don't really date, they seem to hang out in groups.  Even for dances at school or church they couple up then proceed as a group.  I think you just have to trust your kid, that by 16 they have the values that you have raised them with and will follow them most of the time, regardless of any peer pressure.
